The Healy Hall, Georgetown University

Sitting on a cliff overlooking the Potomac River, an imposing Gothic structure – Gothic Revival to be exact, the Healy Hall was built between 1877-1879 and named after Patrick Francis Healy, the 27th president of Georgetown University.

Its first student was William B. Gaston, who was 13 years old when he arrived on campus in 1791 and went on to become a member of Congress. Gaston Hall (see penultimate photo) is named after him.

Designed by architects John Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, who also contributed to the design of the Thomas Jefferson Building in the Library of Congress.

Thomas Jefferson Memorial

Dedicated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (whose own Memorial sits just across on the Tidal Basin), on April 13, 1943, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial stands in a straight line with the White House. Architect John Russell Pope, influenced by Jefferson’s taste in classical architecture, echoed the style seen in Jefferson’s two most famous buildings – Monticello and the University of Virginia Rotunda.

Taliesin West || Peeking Inside

Every single detail bears the signature of the landlord. Taliesin West was Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home and school in the Sonoran desert from 1937 until his death in 1959 at the age of 91. Visiting FLW houses is always a pleasure, but walking inside his own home was a real privilege.
