Carrington frequently drew inspiration from Celtic folklore, including stories of the Sidhe (people of the hills). A race of fairy folk, the Sidhe were known to travel the roads, acting as interlocutors between the human and spiritual worlds. In the legend depicted here, the three Sidhe messengers deliver the Irish king Conaire a prophecy of death and destruction: ”Great are the signs: destruction of life: sating of ravens: feeding of crows, strife of slaughter / Wetting of sword-edge, shields with broken bosses in hours after sundown.”Leonora Carrington || Red Horses on the Sidhe, 1996 [detail] Leonora Carrington || Red Horses on the Sidhe, 1996 [detail]
